About HHW collections:
The Bureau of Sanitation has established a number of permanent collection sites throughout the City, known as S.A.F.E. CENTERS. These S.A.F.E. CENTERS are open every weekend and provide a timely and convenient way to dispose of your waste. In addition, the Bureau of Sanitation sponsors periodic mobile collection events throughout the City, where residents can drop-off their waste to be disposed properly. They accept: paint and solvents; used motor oil and filters, anti-freeze, and other automotive fluids; cleaning products; pool and garden chemicals; aerosol cans; all medicine except controlled substances; auto batteries; household batteries.

E-waste: computers, monitors, printers, network equipment, cables, telephones, televisions, microwaves, video games, cell phones, radios, stereos, VCRs, and electronic toys.

They do not accept: business waste, ammunition, explosives, radioactive material, controlled substances, biological waste or tires. Bulky Items: furniture, refrigerators, washing machines/dryers, conventional ovens, paper, computer software.
Transportation limit for chemical related items:It is against the law to transport more than 15 gallons or 125 pounds of hazardous waste to collection sites. Please pack your waste properly to prevent tipping or spilling of the waste during transportation.

Here is your local  Northridge collection site;
          Nicole Bernson SAFE Collection Center

10241 N. Balboa Blvd.
Northridge, CA 91325

Hours of Operation:
 Saturdays, and Sundays
 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

WARNING:
Disposing of household chemicals in your trash, storm drains or sewers damages the environment, and is AGAINST THE LAW. Illegal dumping carries a minimum fine of $5000 per day per violation up to $100,000 per day per violation or imprisonment (Section 25189.5, Health & Safety Code). The City of Los Angeles operates the "HAZMOBILE" drop-off program to provide for the safe and legal disposal of your unwanted household chemicals.
Below is a picture of the Nicole Bernson SAFE Collection Center in Northridge.  The back of the car is loaded up with an old TV and several cans of paint and paint thinner.  It is a drive-thru service, so you won’t even need to leave your car. The Collection Center workers remove the materials from your car and sort them according to waste category. It is fast and easy and good for the environment!

Note: All Waste Collection Services are suspended during rainy weather.
